Why HomelyCraft: Handmade Gifts Made to Be Kept

Solid wood, your own words cut into it, checked before anything is engraved, and made in a Lancashire workshop after you ask for it. What a HomelyCraft gift is, and why people give them.

Why HomelyCraft: Handmade Gifts Made to Be Kept

There is a particular pause when somebody opens a gift and finds their own name on it. The wrapping stops being interesting. They turn the thing over, read it again, and go quiet for a second. That pause is what HomelyCraft is built around.

We are a small handmade studio in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, making personalized gifts - engraved keepsake boxes, name plaques, photo frames, wooden signs and complete gift boxes. Fifty pieces, each made after somebody asks for it, carrying the names, dates and words that make it theirs.

Gifts that are still in the house twenty years later

Most gifts have a shelf life. Flowers have a week, chocolate has an evening, a gadget has a couple of years before something better arrives. A piece with a date cut into it has none - it simply becomes part of the house.

That is the whole design brief here. Every piece is chosen for whether it will survive being ordinary: a board that gets used for bread every week, a box that ends up holding the things nobody can throw away, a frame that moves house three times and goes back on the wall each time. We would rather make something that earns its place than something that photographs well and then goes in a drawer.

Your words, cut into solid wood

The engraving is the gift. Everything else exists to carry it well, which is why the material choices are not decorative:

  • Solid wood, not veneered board. Oak and walnut cut deep and hold a clean edge, so a name is still crisp years later rather than fading into a printed surface.
  • Oiled, not lacquered. An oiled finish lets the grain stay visible and can be refreshed in ten minutes with a cloth. Lacquer looks glossy on day one and chips on day four hundred.
  • Glass, ceramic and fittings bought in from people who make them well, then engraved and assembled here.

If you like knowing what you are getting before you order, oak against walnut compares how the two woods take an engraving and how they age.

The spelling is right because somebody reads it

Every personalized order gets a layout preview: your text, laid out at the real dimensions of the piece, emailed to you before anything is cut. You see the spacing, the size, where the date sits under the names.

People use that stage for all sorts of things we did not expect - moving a word, asking for a nickname instead of a full name, deciding the date reads better written out than in numbers. Changes at that point cost nothing, because nothing has happened yet. It is the most useful ten minutes in the whole process, and it is why a HomelyCraft piece arrives saying exactly what you meant it to say.

What to engrave has several hundred lines that have worked, if the words are the part you are stuck on.

Made for one person, after you ask

There is no stock room here. Nothing is sitting on a shelf waiting for an order to be matched to it, which means your piece begins its life as a board being chosen for it.

Engraved pieces take three to five working days to make, photo and multi-item pieces five to seven, counted from the moment you approve the layout. If a date cannot be met we say so before taking the order rather than after - a gift that arrives the week after the birthday is not the gift you paid for. The workshop walkthrough covers each stage if you want to see what happens in those days.

It arrives ready to hand over

Gift packaging is not an upsell here, it is how everything ships: tissue, ribbon, a rigid box and a message card in your words. When a parcel is going straight to the recipient the invoice stays out of it, so nobody opens their present and reads what it cost.

It matters more than it sounds. A keepsake handed over in a courier bag starts the moment badly, and a surprising number of gifts are posted directly because the person giving them is three hundred miles away.

From one Lancashire workshop to wherever it is going

Everything is made in the UK and tracked everywhere it goes: one to two working days inside the UK, three to six to the US, Canada and the EU, five to ten elsewhere. UK orders over £75 ship free.

Prices are set in pounds because that is where the studio is, and the site converts them into your own currency so nobody has to open a calculator to work out what a gift costs. What the range costs sets out the bands if you want the numbers before you browse.

Where HomelyCraft pieces end up

The occasions repeat, and the pattern in them is worth knowing if you are choosing something now.

  • Weddings. Name plaques and keepsake boxes, often ordered by one person for the couple and sometimes by the couple for each other. Wedding gifts.
  • Anniversaries. The date, the coordinates of a place, a star map of one specific night. Anniversary gifts.
  • Milestone birthdays. Thirtieth, fiftieth, eightieth - a memory box tends to beat an object, because the people around them can fill it. Birthday gifts.
  • New babies and new homes. Two occasions where the house has just changed shape and a name on the wall is the first thing that is properly theirs. New baby and housewarming.
  • Parents and grandparents. Handwriting, recipes, photographs - the things that are irreplaceable and currently sitting in a drawer. Family gifts.
  • Remembering someone. People and pets. These are the quietest orders we take and the ones we take most carefully.

Five pieces to start from

If you want a shortcut rather than fifty products, these five cover most of what people are looking for.

The full gift guide maps the whole range by who you are buying for, and how to choose a personalized gift is the one to read if you know the person but not the object.

Starting an order

Pick a piece, fill in the names, dates and message, and send it. A layout preview comes back with the delivery cost and payment options, and the making starts once you are happy with it.

If you would rather talk it through first - an unusual size, a wood you had in mind, two pieces that need to match, a date that worries you - send an email. It reaches the person who will make it, which is the main advantage of a studio this size.

Questions about about the studio

What does HomelyCraft make?

Personalized handmade gifts - engraved keepsake boxes, name plaques, photo frames, wooden signs and complete gift boxes. Fifty pieces in all, each made to order with the names, dates, photographs or message you send.

What makes a HomelyCraft gift different from a printed personalized gift?

The engraving is cut into solid wood rather than printed onto a surface, the finish is oil rather than lacquer so it can be refreshed, and the layout is proofed with you at the real size of the piece before anything is cut.

How long does a HomelyCraft piece take to make?

Three to five working days for engraved pieces and five to seven for photo or multi-item pieces, counted from when you approve the layout preview. Delivery is then one to two working days in the UK, three to six to the US, Canada and the EU, and five to ten elsewhere.

Where is HomelyCraft based?

Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, in the United Kingdom. Everything is made in that studio and shipped worldwide with tracking, priced in pounds and shown converted into your own currency.

Can I change the engraving after I order?

Yes - that is what the layout preview is for. You see your text at the real dimensions of the piece and can change the spelling, spacing, size or wording at no cost. Nothing is cut until you approve it.
