What to Engrave: Message Ideas That Do Not Sound Like a Greeting Card

The engraving is the part people agonise over and then default to something safe. Here is how to write one that sounds like you.

Most people choose the object in ten minutes and then spend three days stuck on the engraving. That is the right way round - the object is just wood until the words go on it - but the paralysis is avoidable.

Two rules solve most of it. Write it the way you would say it out loud. And be specific enough that a stranger would not understand it.

Anniversary

  • 14.02.2019 - and every argument since
  • Year seven. Still your fault.
  • Where it started: 53.8467 N, 2.9894 W
  • Two names, one date. Nothing else. (Genuinely - the plainest option is the one people keep.)

Dates outperform sentences. “Happy Anniversary” is an occasion; “14 February 2019” is a moment, and moments do not go out of date every twelve months.

Wedding

  • Sarah & Daniel · 12 June 2026 · the first day of the rest of the washing up
  • Established 2026
  • Open on your first anniversary (on a wine box - it turns one gift into two)
  • From everyone at table nine

Birthdays

Milestone birthdays are the one case where a number does the work on its own. Engrave the number large and the name small, and resist the urge to add a joke about age - it is funny once and then it is on the shelf for thirty years.

  • Forty. Still the fastest in the family.
  • Ellie, 18 - go and be a menace
  • For Dad, from the people who ruined your car

Memorial and remembrance

Keep these shorter than you think. A name, the years, and one line. Anything longer reads as an obituary rather than as something to live with.

  • Margaret Hall · 1946 - 2024 · the recipe stays in the family
  • Bess · 2011 - 2024 · best dog in the village

The five mistakes

  1. Borrowed poetry. If the line would fit on any gift for any couple, it is doing nothing.
  2. Too many details. Names, date, coordinates, quote and photo on one piece reads like a completed form.
  3. A joke that only works this year. Engraving is permanent; topical humour is not.
  4. Formal language you would never use. “To my beloved wife on the occasion of” belongs on a certificate.
  5. Guessed spellings. Confirm names in writing. This is the single most common problem in custom orders and the only one that cannot be fixed afterwards.

If you are still stuck

Answer this in one sentence: what would you tell someone who asked why you chose this person? Then cut it down to eight words. That is almost always the engraving.

And if the layout still looks wrong when we send the preview, say so - we would rather redraw it twice than cut it once.
